Good morning everyone...
I am forwarding to you the following message from David Ashby in La Ceiba. David runs a nonprofit called Helping Honduras Kids (http://www.helphonduraskids.org), focusing primarily on the children at the SOS Children's Village orphanage just outside of La Ceiba. David is currently trying to find specialized medical assistance for a 14-year old boy from Utila. If you can have any suggestions or would like to get personally involved in this case, please e-mail David at dlashby.....hn ... thanks.
Marco Message from David:
I just received a phone call from Utila island last night. This was from the town in the cays, near to where Sindy Perdomo lived (Sindy's case was presented to this group some time back, and she spent 6 months in Ohio, and is now back healthy and happy). The 14-yr-old boy, Robert Howell, has lost >30 lbs in the last month, down to about 98 lbs. He is tired all the time. So his parents took him to a clinic in San Pedro Sula where they ran some tests. I can send the test results separately. I can't interpret the exams, but they said he needed a heart valve replacement, and that this procedure was not available in Honduras. The Utila cays has about 600 people, mostly fishing families. I don't know the details of the economic situation of the family. There would be no more than a few percent of families in the cays that might be considered "rich" by Honduran standards. The family have passports, and the mother has a multiple entry visa that expires in 5 years. The boy's visa expires on the 29th of this month. This would indicate that they have made previous trips to the US. I know that the father has a small business on the cays, and he takes the gas cylinders used for cooking over to La Ceiba to be refilled, which is a service he charges for.
I am quite certain that they cannot afford the Dr and hospital charges that would be associated with a medical procedure of this nature. A US Dr. would have to access what is wrong with the boy, but his symptoms don't sound very good, particularly if the weight loss continues. If there are any groups that help childrens' heart cases, please let me know what you think, so I can let this family know what to expect.
I can't access the urgency of this, but the family is quite worried. Also let me know what additional information you would need in order to make a decision as to whether or not you can help. One group that I contacted was saturated with heart cases, so I need to find some alternatives. Thanks for caring,
Dave Ashby www.helpinghonduraskids.org
