Trying to compare Roatan to Hawaii or the Caymans is just crazy. Besides the obvious reasons they both have a infrastructure in place to handle the demands of thousands of tourists whereas Roatan is the step child of the Honduras government and is looked on as no more than a tax collector of the people of live their and have businesses their. An island that wants to exploit tourism for what its worth needs to have a better power grid than a field of Caterpillar generators. I have read so many times that the Honduran government was planning to run power cables from the main land to stop the black out situation. It won't happen because Roatan power is a private run greedy operation. Now locals can handle black outs but tourists can't and won't handle it. What they remember about their trip to Roatan won't be the fine food or diving or beautiful scenery; what they remember is the power went out, that shut down their AC, that made the vacation uncomfortable. If boondoggle bothers you then use Pipedream. On paper it all makes sense. A golf course in Roatan catering to the tourists from the states or the occasional cruise ship that stays for more than a few hours sounds great to both locals and foreigners who live and work their. Problem is these places have no financing and relay on overpriced land sales to make anything happen. Saying it is a Wyndham property that is going to have golf is easy to sell. Saying it is a lot on the East End with no electric or water or sewer is a hard sell. The Caribbean is full of concrete pillars with rusted rebar sticking through the top echoing another failed project that was under-financed and someone's pipe dream. If this project is so important to the Honduran government then why don't they do like Mexico and build government owned resorts. The governments their build the resorts then get companies that know how to run them like a Wyndham take over the properties. They don't expect companies to build projects is areas such as the East End of Roatan because it is not profitable. Real companies do not want to purchase 500,000 generators for their property because the power goes out when least expected. Real companies do not want to head ache of building water treatment plants and keep them running because their are no local services. And last, what about the sewer and brown water generated by a Mega resort. Another 1,000,000 their. My point is unless the Honduran government really wants to develop Roatan as a Central American tourist attraction they had better change their ways and join the world of 2005. Don't get me wrong, I have my golf clubs just sitting here in the West End. If it takes 10 years to get to the first tee, I'll probably be dead anyway. Have a nice day.
