What I do is put the rice and the salt in the salt shaker and keep it in a cupboard when not in use, and don't leave it laying around out in the open air longer than necessary. I also change the rice each time I put more salt in the shaker.
The other secret is keeping the large container of rice in a ziploc bag in the cupboard, and be sure to press the air out of the bag before sealing. This helps a lot.
One last thing. I "bonk" the salt shaker on the counter when I'm done using to get the salt away from the holes where it will swell and cause problems in the future.
