    Our Faith In The Field

A Historical Religious Perspective on The Study on Mental Health.

Facts can be taught concepts must be imagined.

Chronic mental illness has puzzled us since the beginning of time. It not only bewildered and confused us as individuals throughout modern times, but it also challenged science, theology and medicine. And at certain times has even threatened divisions within the church itself. Faith In The Field: A Historical Religious Perspective On Mental Health, presents a clear explanation of this debilitating disease, and introduces a theological viewpoint, in which the modern day Church could play a broader role in serving the outpatient population afflicted with such.

At this socially sensitive time in mankind’s history I would like to take the opportunity to introduce a serious synopsis of mental health issues presented through these writings entitled Faith In The Field: A Historical Religious Perspective On Mental Health. The manuscript describes in detail the history of mental health, its treatments and religious methodologies throughout the ages. In it, I present a clear, complete history of mental health, the origins of insanity and the changes, and adaptations the system has endured throughout the last 2500 years.

Faith In The Field is an intellectual historical interpretation of mental health that takes readers on a journey back in a time prior to the understanding of the illness, prior to the emergence of hospitals, the dawn of nursing, the inception of medications or the introduction of rational treatment. One of my chief reasons for writing this book is to provide a more spiritual understanding to field of mental health as well as a clearer and deeper understanding of the therapeutic millieu to the Church and other faith based organizations now interested in the field of mental health. This, which would in turn perhaps soften the attituditional approach now shared between the Church and the secular psych and therapeutic communities toward those whom they aid in their recovery. Another reason for this book is to help break down barriers created by the stigma associated with mental illness and to educate the general public about the true facts surrounding mental illness, its origins and its
prognoses. Faith Within In The Field provides and in depth analysis on the role the Church played in the field of mental health throughout the 16th and 17th century and focuses on the positive impact the modern Church could have on the mental health community if given an opportunity. Although in previous years working with the mentally ill was seen only as a responsibility for psychiatry and the psychological communities, Faith In The Field clearly shows us that recently, theologians and Christian counselors have conducted research that has shown that counseling with the emotionally and mentally ill though it remains primarily of special psychological and psychiatric concerns it is not always the highly skilled mental health professional persons who brings out the best results. For it is a team effort in which all concerned individuals could play a vital role.

Faith In The Field, also indicates and explains the benefits found by merging a treatment of pharmacology, Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Christian counseling and on the benefit of Nouthetic counseling, and how combined these can also offer untold help. How this new approach, demonstrates in many cases, shared responsibility and successful result.

Data collected by Christians counselors while visiting and helping individuals suffering with mental distress has also benefited Faith In The Field in part, this which has stemmed from a privilege and duty, also provides us with a list of basic theologian and Christians guidelines, and recommendations for counseling the emotionally ill. Faith In The Field provides an in depth understanding of the study on DBT, psychotropics, the usage of the Scriptures and the lack of God’s presence in the field of mental health. Overall, Faith In The Field is a complete psychological, sociological, theological and a methodological reference. It is a literary gem that should be visible in the bookcases of every Church, Faith Base, or mental health facility in the world. My purpose is to communicate with a diverse audience and bring forth an eye-to-eye dialogue surrounding issues affecting the mentally ill and those who care for them from the frontline of the mental health field and leading into the
church. The text is scholarly written, well researched and composed in a manner that makes it accessible to all who have an interest or a need to further their knowledge of the field, the history, policies and future of the field of Mental Health and substance abuse, and those who find themselves as being part of it. Statistics found within its pages the frequency with which t mental health problems affect our communities and the church. This book is designed to help Reverend, pastors and ministers to understand that they too need to think about mental health.

At least one third of all women will suffer from a bout of depression. Schizophrenia affects approximately 1% of the population. Serious bipolar disease affects 2-3% of the population. That means if you are in a town with 50,000 people, there will be over 1,500 people with serious mental illness. If there are more than 100 people in your church, there is a good chance that some member will either suffer from mental illness or have a family member struggling with such. When most people are suicidal, one of the first places they turn is to their minister. Although currently I’ve noted that most ministers do not have any special training to deal with this aspect of their ministry, nor a complete understanding of mental illness. Faith In The Field weaves a therapeutic understanding of the use of scriptures and psychoanalysis therefore allowing room for rapid Nouthetic Christian counseling of the severity of the illness, through answers. In my many discussions with individuals
suffering from this illness, while conducting this research, one of the most intriguing questions that always came, was about ministers and special needs people. E.g. are congregations blind friendly? Are they deaf friendly? Any if so, suppose a hearing impaired individual wants to attend church? Should the mentally ill be in church and what kind of special needs have been allotted if they attend or to encourage them to attend? And how can the Church reach out to the mentally ill living in our communities? One of the ladies I recently interviewed reminded me that many mentally ill individuals do have religious issues and often wondered if God loves them and if he does then why did he created mental illnesses? And why didn’t he create her, well? Others questioned if it was a punishment from God? Faith In The Field, provides the needed tools for religions on how to deal with these religious issues and teaches ways for a deeper understanding to the counselor and the counselee to
who’s interested in knowing that God loves and cares about them, which is the most powerful message at a time of crisis in the life of the mentally ill. Faith In The Field is a 166,000 word manuscript, with over 400 pages of detail information based on the author’s 22 years of experience of working in the mental health field. The author also provides workshops, lectures and one to one, consulting to Reverends, Pastors and Ministers interested in learning and sharing with their congregation www.sabaswhittaker.com

Not long ago if you where to ask a scientist if he believed in God, he would have answered you bluntly and told you, of course not, I’m a scientist. Today if you were to ask a scientist the same question, he would answer you quickly and tell you yes of course, I’m a scientist.
