Dinorah,
Mulatto derived from the thought that white slavers could not produce offspring with black slaves. Hence, the term mulatto. Mules are produced from horses and donkeys yet mules cannot produce mules.
Apparently these slavers were very much off the mark in their thinking and they should have discovered this maybe two to three months planting their seeds. Nonetheless the term stuck around. Go figure.
I do think that we need not be so hypersensitive because 99% of the people who use the word do not know its roots. I think actually calling someone a mule is more insulting than saying that he/she is "mulatto" because of a mixed heritage.
And since I am on my sandbox, when did illegal immigrants become undocumented workers. Give me a break. Let's stop being hypersensitive about labels that are not intended to harm and lets stop creating euphemisms for every other word in the English language. A drunk is not alcoholically challenged, he is a drunk. Whether you call someone a janitor or a sanitary engineer, a broom is still a broom.
(And yes the biggy) People who used to be called crippled then who were renamed handicapped and then renamed disabled and then were rename physically challenged for the most part still call a wheelchair a wheelchair. Go figure.
Anyhow, thanks to everyone who responded to my questions about hospital missions. I am working with a group of doctors and have forwarded to them the e-mail responses from members of this group and the Bay Islands genealogy group. I will post an update this weekend.
Sincerely,
Kirt
