Hi ,I have lived on Roatan now for 13 years. Yes, there is crime in Honduras, and always has been. However in the years that I have lived here Roatan running a business, I have had no problems with crime. I have had a safe and secure environment. There is crime as in anywhere else on the planet. However there is common sense for foreigners to heed to. Do not go where you are alone, where you are a stranger, where you not prepared to be part of a local environment. Do not be out all hours of the night. Do not flash money ,travel with groups of friends. Stay in the well traveled areas. Lock your doors whether you are home or not, fence in your yard. Do not invite strangers into your home.Basically know your environment, know the people in your community.Remember always you are a guest in a foreign country, respect that. Roatan is a land of haves and have nots. To often the haves are pushing locals around flashing there wealth and disrespecting the locals and their way of life. Yes they are poor ,yes they are not educated, yes they do not have the same culture and work ethics we have. But why should they be like us. My advice to all moving to Honduras and Roatan if you want it to be like home, stay home. Roatan is growing fast and furious, so of course there more problem and crime. The wealth of the expat community spawns more migration to the island and more crime. So yes the problem is greater and yes the community is trying to deal with some of the issues of crime, Yes the local police are trying to work with the community, but remember they are not trained and they are not paid well. In summary,I still love Roatan and I still feel as safe as I do anywhere else in the world and have no intentions of leaving. Also small island have big news ,where everywhere else news seems so remote ,until it happens to you.
