Hello ladies & gentlemen...
A few days ago, we received a message from my good friend Carin Steen of Copan Pinta (http://www.projecthonduras.com/copanpinta). Carin forwarded me a message in Spanish regarding a candle-making micro- enterprise in Honduras called La Luciernaga. I have translated and edited the message below. If you would like to provide your support or helpful contacts, I very much encourage you to do so. This is a great example of human beings being very creative and energetic in their struggle to get ahead, only to lose everything overnight.
Thanks, Marco Message forwarded by Carin:
The House of Refuge is for women (and their daughters) and girls who are victims of domestic violence. The facility is dedicated to providing therapy and protection from continued physical and psychological abuse. The House of Refuge is supported by a micro- enterprise business called La Luciernaga, which produces artisan and decorative candles made by the women and girls residing at the House of Refuge. A team from the House of Refuge directs the operations of La Luciernaga, which also provides training in the management of micro-enterprises.
During the evening of June 5, the workers at La Luciérnaga were the victims of arson. The factory and all of its equipment were lost in a fire believed to have been set on purpose by individuals opposed to the House of Refuge program.
The women and girls associated with the House of Refuge and La Luciernaga are understandably suffering from emotional distress due to this incident. But they are unwilling to accept defeat. Rather, they are looking for a show of solidarity from anyone who is willing to support them and their effort to rebuild what they have lost.
If you are interested getting involved with this rebuilding project, please e-mail Emma Mejia Sabonge at adp.....org.hn or call (504) 237-3353 in Honduras. If you do not receive a response within a few days, e-mail Carin Steen at copanpinta.....com.
To see photographs of women and girls at work at La Luciernaga and read an article about the micro-enterprise, see Honduras This Week at http://www.marrder.com/htw/aug2000/cultural.htm and scroll down to the August 7, 2000 edition.
