Just a note~~` No one living here is unaware of the problem of growing criminal activity as the island population grows. The never-ending question is, "What can YOU do about it that will actually help?" Posting notes here on an e-mail discussion list--while maybe helpful towards venting your personal upset and feelings (which everyone sympathizes with-- and FULLY understands your need to do) --is not doing much good towards helping the island prosper as a whole-- nor does it actually address the real problem of DOING something about island security, right? Thanks to the Ana and the long standing Canaturh-Bay Islands group meetings, residents here have a place to go to express their concerns and to personally address reasonable solutions FACE TO FACE with governmental and police leaders who CAN make a difference in island security. This group of people have been working quietly--and intelligently--without much help--nor many well-deserved Kudos-- to help fund/assist our police department for many many years. Since it came up on the list, this group IS composed of business people from all over the Bay Islands--also of local people and others who have lived here for many years and fully understand the challenges of attempting to undertake such a community/police/governmental assistance project within the Honduran "system." Regardless of MANY difficulties dealing with lack of reasonable police salaries and availability of English speaking police, this group has been HUGELY successful in getting English speaking police on island and working with training for them--not to mention arranging VERY successful benefit events to supply financial assistance to our police force with it's never ending list of equipment needs. No doubt, they will continue to be an asset to us all as the island grows and even more so needs such level-headed, pro-action, community involvement in island security issues. They deserve your support and a HUGE thank you-- as they will not toot their own horns about all the good they do. The recent art auction at Palmetto was success in all ways possible. They raised over $5,000+USD--ALL of which will go directly into police assistance in reasonable, well thought out ways. In short, if crime and police improvement ARE a concern to you, then attend their meetings--and/or the benefits they sponsor--and help where and when you can through this agency with an excellent history of doing the most "hands on" good in the most reasonable (for Honduras) fashion. Have a good suggestion? Something to get off your chest? Go to a meeting and TELL them!! They are not just talking about our police issues--they are listening -- and DOING what is needed to make a difference! So if your never-ending question is, "What can YOU do about it that will actually help?" The easy answer is to go to a meeting--volunteer any spare time or talents you may have--and don't hesitate to cross Ana's hands with money!
