Hello Roatan Yahoo Group:
After reviewing the group rules I thought I’d write a short intro for myself. I’m a doctoral student in Cultural Anthropology at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. I’m here on Roatan to study the effects of tourism on the islands unique mix of peoples and cultures. I’m interested in many different aspects of tourism on the island from how it effects individuals and communities on the island (island, local, residents, visitors, etc), to the creation and development of new economic endeavors, to the racial, ethic, and gendered differences in tourist related jobs, to generational differences in perceptions of tourism and sustainable development on the island to simply what people do when they visit and who they interact with. I am particularly interested in ‘what happens when tourists stop touring and decide to settle’ as well as how interpersonal and romantic relationships between islanders/ locals and foreign individuals contributes to the island household structure and economic development. I will be here on Roatan until late August and hope to meet many of you in person. If you are interested in hearing more about my research or in sharing your perspectives with me I would love to meet for a chat. I’m in the early stages of developing my research focus so for right now I’m casting my net broadly. All comments, questions, and suggestions welcome.
Best, Persephone.
