    Subject: [roatan] case of Meilin

Morning everyone, we just received the following message from my
friend David Ashby in La Ceiba regarding a 15-year girl named Meilin
Peña who needs to undergo medical treatment for seizures caused by
numerous factors. If you would like to provide support of any kind,
please e-mail David at dlashby.....hn to see how you can get
involved. David operates a nonprofit group called Helping Honduras
Kids (http://www.helpinghonduraskids.org). He will be one of our
guest speakers at the Conference on Honduras
    (http://www.projecthonduras.com/conference. Thanks. Marco
    Message from David:

For some years I have been helping a red-haired deaf girl named
Meilin. She is now 15, and attends the Emilia d' Cuire special school
here in La Ceiba, where she is learning sign language and some school
skills. Transportation is difficult for her as she lives in the
pineapple fields some distance from town. Her family has very limited
    financial resources.

Since she was very little, Meilin has been taking Phenobarbital (100
mg/day), for seizures. Her deafness and probably the seizures are the
result of meningitis as a baby. Recently the seizure episodes have
become more frequent and severe. Her parents say she just "blacks
out". She has also experienced some "trembling" of one side of her
face. This is accompanied by severe headaches.

The director at the special school sent her to a local neurologist,
who has put her on Carbamazepine (200 mg, 3x/day), plus temporarily
also on Laxifen (paracetamol 350 mg/metocarbamol 400 mg, 2x/day) for
headaches and N-Clorazepam (0.25 mg before retiring) for "panic
attacks". She seems nervous and afraid some of the time, but only
recently. Maybe there are some secondary effects of the medicines
that cause some of her symptoms. The neurologist recommended a "TAC
cerebral", which I believe is a CAT scan of her head, plus an
    electroencephelogram.

The spelling of the medicines and exams may not be correct, and they
may represent Spanish versions not familiar to US trained personnel.
The exams will run about $250, and the follow-up treatment may be
somewhat expensive, especially for this relatively poor family. Also
for the medical personnel on this distribution list, please let me
    know what your opinions/comments/questions/recommendations are.

I want very badly to help this girl, as she already has many strikes
against her. She was just beginning to come out of her shell, with
her new-found ability to communicate via sign language.

Thanks for your consideration of this case and for caring,

    Dave Ashby
