Good afternoon people...
One of the highlights of last year's Conference on Honduras (http://www.projecthonduras.com/conference) was the full-day Workshop on Sustainable Programs given by Kathy Tschiegg, RN of Central American Medical Outreach (http://www.camo.org) of Orrville, Ohio and Santa Rosa de Copan.
Kathy has more than two decades of experience working in Honduras, first organizing medical brigade missions from the US and subsequently creating a nonprofit foundation with a permanent presence in the country. "CAMO" is one of those wonderful model organizations to which I refer people all the time. It provides excellent examples of how to empower Hondurans to help themselves and to provide a reliable, ongoing support system for them.
As more and more foreign humanitarian/volunteer groups visit Honduras and keep returning, they are increasingly interested in learning how to make their projects/programs more lasting, more sustainable. They want to know how to better solve problems and work with Honduran institutions.
I think it is vital for foreign groups to understand how the Honduran "system" works or doesn't work, and thus how to find or create innovative solutions to issues and problems that meet the needs of the people. Without this knowledge, I fear some groups may tend to become frustrated and eventually decide to go work elsewhere.
I do not want to lose humanitarian/volunteer individuals or group because of a lack of information of how best to work in Honduras. Honduras cannot afford to lose good expertise, experience, energy, and talent.
I spoke by phone with Kathy last week, and she has agreed to do a repeat performance of last year's workshop... To see an outline of the workshop, go to http://www.projecthonduras.com/conference/conference2005/sustainabilit yworkshop2005.htm
The Workshop on Sustainable Programs this year will take place in the conference room of the Hotel Marina Copan on Friday, October 21.
Kathy has asked me to emphasize that the most number of people she can accommodate at the workshop is 30. Last year, we had such tremendous interest in this segment that we let a few additional people in at the last minute. But clearly it was too many. The number of participants will be restricted to 30.
If you are interested in attending the workshop, e-mail me and let me know within the next month. Please note that Kathy is looking primarily for individuals in positions of leadership within their respective organizations... individuals who have decison-making authority regarding the development of projects/programs.
Thanks, Marco >> "Every man has to seek in his own way to make his own self more noble and to realize his own true worth. You must give some time to your fellow man. Even if it's a little thing, do something for those who have need of help, something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it. For remember, you don't live in a world all your own.
