Roatan Group,
The following is an e-mail discussion about poor water quality in the Sandy Bay, Roatan area at a recent international coastal conference. Local dive shops, realtors, and environmentalists might want to look into this further to insure the protection of the reef in Roatan, which is Roatan's most precious resource. That area is in the middle of the marine preserve. Changes in development regulations or perhaps developing development regs are probably needed to prevent runoff into the sea. Problems could be coming from sewage disposal as well. It's a problem worth looking into.

I was at a conference in new orleans last week (coastal zone 05), an international conference. One of the sessions I attended was a presentation on coral habitats impacted by poor water quality and where they were trying different methods to grow new coral.
One of these locations, and one with the poorest water quality and poorest response for regrowth, was on Roatan, at Sandy Bay. I thought you might want to know about this.
I got the presenter's card, Astrid Yazmine Mejia, Instituto Hondureno De Turismo, www.letsgohonduras.com

I knew there was an international study going on to see how fast coral is growing and have seen some of the little plastic boxes they wire to the reef for the study. They just put those things down about a year or a little over a year ago. I suppose it's the same study.
The coral looks really great in Sandy Bay. Wonder what's making the water quality bad in that area. Did they say?

Nonpoint source pollution from development activities (is causing the poor water quality), and it is near Sandy Bay. The coral gets smothered and or other animals are impacted which in turn impacts the coral. They are not having success with the regrowth trials there.
The conference was Coastal Zone 05. They have it every 2 years, I think. It is the first one that I have been to.
