Good evening people... Well, here's a tough one. Santos Magdalena Lopez Maldonado is 20 years of age. Because of a large tumor which protrudes out of her mouth preventing her from eating solid foods, however, this young woman suffers from severe malnutrition and resembles someone who is 10 years old. Magdalena can barely swallow liquids through a straw. The tumor was caused by an infection in the left side of her mouth. It pushes against Magdalena's tongue and keeps it immobile, which adds to the young woman's inability to eat. Magdalena comes from an extremely poor family in the village of El Roblito, about 12 kilometers from the city of Comayagua. She and her parents and her six siblings live in a small adobe hut. Magdalena has suffered from the tumor since she was 11 years old. She begs for money near the La Libertad bus terminal. Magdalena's father, Simeon Lopez, has taken his daughter to the Hospital Escuela in Tegucigalpa several times to seek medical help, but has apparently been turned away. The story of Santos Magdalena is being covered by La Tribuna newspaper. If you are interested in assisting this young woman, please call Martin Ramirez at 988-6561. We may also be able to find someone within the projecthonduras.com network who is working in the Comayagua area and might be willing to establish contact with Magdalena and her parents. Any suggestions or contacts would be much appreciated. Ideally, we could find a physician at the Hospital Escuela to take Magdalena under his/her wing and walk the family through the entire process of caring for her. Support from any foreign medical brigades that will be working in the Comayagua area would be another option.
