Just to help a little... If you are not fond of CDs the go with an external drive that plugs into your USB port. Get one that is powered from the USB port and does not require an external power wall wart. This way you can lock it up at night to store your data on in a fire box or some other container.
Good luck
Keith Subject: [roatan] What I decided and where I found it. I decided on a Panasonic SUPER toughbook. Had looked at them online--and the feedback here sealed the deal. I went with the CF-28 completely waterproof series. They claim I can run a car over it --drop it in the sea and it will still work. I got it used from Bob Johnson's used computers online--he has a strong corner on this market. Base price was $899--but I upgraded to XP OS and 512 ram and put myself in the $1000 range (for what is a $5,000-7000 machine
with a 30 gig hd.)
Downside on this machine is it has a plug for highspeed--but not a wireless.
I'll now have to buy a wi-fi card for it for a type two slot. Any ideas where to find one? And maybe a card for backup memory as well?
And it comes with a 1.44 floppy drive. The CD rom drive is not a read/write
and to add one to this machine is $500. I have other machine to copy music on, so that's not really an issue. It has card slots for data backup as well.
My personal luck with CD's has not been good anyway. The salt eats holes in
that nice shinny finish and they don't work so well in short order. The floppies are holding up better for me anyway or a card backup will make better sense.
It's just a 800 mhtz Pentium machine--but should do what I need it to--folks
claim--forever.
It will ship in 48 hours.
In short, it's not fancy--it's not high tech--has fewer bells and whistles--but it should do the job and can support the bells and whistles I really need.
Thanks to everyone who wrote with all their suggestions! Most were very helpful--and many were fun to read too.
BTW if you want a machine like this be aware that it's a REAL monster sealed
into a huge waterproof magnesium case. Designed for military use, it wieghs 9 lbs. This is not a typical laptop.
