Good afternoon, Gordon: VHF Radios are still in use, but not nearly to the extent they once were. You will find them in use mostly in the eastern part of the island. Many folks are now using cell phones, and with the new towers cropping up all over my guess is that they have good coverage. Folks around French Harbour that still monitor VHF are usually on channel #22...this holds true for French Key and several folks in northside villages such as Polly Tillly Bight. Those over toward Port Royal use, I think #72 or 76, but I am not at all certain. I really think your best bet is to buy or rent a cell phone, buy your minutes on a card, and be done with it. By the way, my wife and I also will be on the island for a week in October, and hope you'll look us up. In the event you have time please contact me by calling a good friend of mine...Mr. Errol Jackson of French Key. His on-island number is 455- 7509. Also, if you are interested in going fishing with a local, Mister Errol is your man...or maybe just snorkeling, etc. He has a nice 25 foot diesel cabin cruiser named "Struggle", and his price is extremely reasonable. Once again, thanks for your great review of my island novel.../_The Judas Bird_/.
All the best...dke http://www.thejudasbird.com
