Subject: [roatan] GSM Phone Coverage Observations

I just returned from a wonderful two week trip to Roatan and thought it
might help to summarize my results of using my GSM phone.

Caveat 1: Things change from week to week. What's true one week is not
    necessarily true the next.
Caveat 2: Things change from location to location. What works in one spot
on the island may not work in another.

    I use T-Mobile in the US. My phone is a tri-band (850, 1800, 1900) GSM
phone. I decided not to buy a Megatel SIM and roam with my US number. This
was expensive (over $1 per minute) but adequate since I didn't need to make
many calls and I didn't want to spend the cab fare to get to Coxen Hole to
    buy a SIM.

    >From the second day forward I was able to both make and receive calls from
West Bay and West End. The Caller ID for incoming calls worked fine. The
Caller ID for outgoing calls did not appear to work. The people I called
could not see my number on their displays. The connection quality was
    excellent.

As far as data devices (e.g. Blackberrys), I don't know. I did not see a
GPRS indicator on my phone. Alo/Megatel does claim to support GPRS on its
    website.

Overall I was quite pleased. I was able to address business issues back in
    the US with no problem.

Again, remember Caveats 1 and 2 above!
