So I can purchase a cell phone with no monthly charges? Just a phone card? What's the average price of a phone? Thanks Dave

Get a cellphone when you arrive here--otherwise you'll have to reconfigure a USA phone to work here--buy a chip--wait at a shop--and so on. Phones are avialable at Eldons--buy cards to use as you go--cost $100 or so each. Ask about buying one you can sell back--or leasing one.
Radios only work line of sight--and we have mountians here that means they won't get to the locations you mentioned that are all over the island from one ned to the other an hour or so drive apart in some cases.
However, cellphones may not do it either--some areas are simply black holes for phones period. Sandy Bay has troubles--as do some other areas. Some areas may be better covered with Megatel phones--some with Celtel. May need to check at Video Picks in the barrio for Megatel too.
All that said, even assuming you have a Honduran programmed phone--and card--and have people staying where they can get signal--and the right brand of phone for that area--phones here simply don't work sometimes.
If it's a BY GOD that you all be able to contact each other at all times the only way is to stay in earshot. Welcome to Honduras!
Also, as you might have noticed, we tend to use e-mail here. It works best as most places have it set up with wireless conection of some sort--or at least dial up on a local phone. Check with places you are staying on this as internet here is NOT free anywhere--IF they have it.
As always, we hope this helps.
