Dear Group,
I have tried to let this subject go but cannot do it anymore.
I think tipping should be left up to the customers to give. But I have noticed that in most places on the mainland and other Central American countries the tip is already included on your check. I guess then at the end it is split among all the staff, which probably won't leave much to everyone since they only charge 10% on all checks. I think Roatan is one of the few places that doesn't charge tip on the checks (in most places) which is good.
I have to say that tipping goes a long way specially in Honduras. I am probably one of the few Hondurans who pay 20% tip regardless. I also probably overpay the guys who handle my luggage and/or boxes at all 3 major airports--you know these guys get to know you by name or by a simple "amiga". This was also said by Sandy because these guys will go out of their way to help you whether you have the money or not. Sometimes, I come back with hardly any cash and I let them know that I don't have enough to pay them--their answer is "don't worry because we know that when you have (money) you always pay us good". I even tip when I do take out on some restaurants--because people go out of their way to get your food! If I pay with credit card, I never leave the tip on the credit card--I leave cash.
So let's just close this one and next time you go to a restaurant, hotel or airport--remember that is up to you to tip or not. You, your conscience or what you can afford to give will go a long way ...
This is just my two cents worth!
