The initials MS tattooed on each pectoral of this fine specimen of manhood stand for ' Mara Salvatrucha ' which was a gang originally started in El Salvador during the revolution and adopted LA style gang hand signals , pot smoking methods and dress codes. The mara salvatrucha is the opposing gang to the 'mara diez y ocho'. The two gangs make law on the mainland in tough barrios like Comayaguela in Tegus even the police dare to come out of the posta. On roatan there are small pockets of wannabee gangsters who adopt gang behaviour ( smoking excessive amounts of dope , living in communes , sharing women , walking around with the torso naked and baggy jeans waistline down below their buttocks which are covered by yes the famous boxers)and in order to support the hedonistic lifestyle venture out occasionally and commit ' asaltos' on any unfortunate that ventures out of doors in arough neighbourhood with something that can be sold ( gold chains etc.).Pockets of these wannabbe gangs who pledge alliances with the MS or M18 are prevalent in Bo. El Swampo ( calle ocho ) , coxenhole ; Bo. El Bight Oakridge ; La bahia in Los Fuertes and 'El Burrinche ' en West End ( more or less behind Woody's groceries ). I have an employee who has been with me for a year now and who was once member of one of these ' chapters' .He was shot in Bo. Los Fuertes 3 years ago during a rival gang dispute and became a born again Christian and family man.He has enlightened me quite a bit as to what this sub-culture on Roatan is all about.Its quite interesting ( more so I suppose for someone who studies sociology )and necessary for all of us to be aware of I think if we are to address the issues that face us if we are to prevent crime here on Roatan and look for long term solutions.
