Dr. Evans:
As usual you are a WEALTH of information!! Any chance you could
write a "What you should know before you visit Roatan" Guide in
between your marvelous novels?
My husband and I purchased several lobster tails from a local man
while on the island. He was set up across from the grocery in Coxon
Hole and operating out of a cooler. Naturally, being from Florida
and knowing how much you pay for tails here, we were very enamoured
with the price. We did know enough not to purchase any that were
undersized (at least by our standards here in FL) and his stash
seemed to be on the up-and-up size-wise. What we did NOT have any
idea of was how these lobsters may have been caught and it never
occurred to us that such unscrupulous measures may have been used
as what you describe. In our minds, we were purchasing from a local
man (didn't chew him down on price because the price was so much
better than what we'd ever seen anyway!) and we were getting some
awesome lobster tails... win-win. But now I wonder... could we
have unwittingly supported the unlawful and unscrupulous harvesting
of lobster? How would one know?
Now! Of course I don't want to assume that all local people are
unconcerned with their reefs and it's fauna. In fact, I know this
to be quite the contrary (since I read your book!!) and would
presume most people are making an honest living. But I would like
to be better prepared for our next trip in understanding some of the
pitfalls that we may not know to look for. Is there a
recommendation on what you should or should not do in purchasing
fresh lobster and fish while on the island?
