A problem is arising in First Bight with the saltwater crocodiles
that have reclaimed this habitat as their new home. After talking to
Linda Brown earlier today, she has informed me that they are becoming
more plentiful ( the kids are growing up ) and they are losing their
fear towards humans. It has been observed that some residents of the
area have been feeding them.
There may be some who thought these animals might make good natural guard
dogs to prevent water access to their properties if fed.
I had hoped not.
After being reared in Louisiana with these animals my entire life, I can
promise that they WILL start coming on land and chomping on children and pets when
food supply is no longer enough for them -- even without any such
encouragement. They may also range by water into nearby resort areas on calm days for
food as they grow larger.
They often have no fear of humans as they grow larger--since they eat
meat--and can take down large animals-- they will probably just see them as dinner.
Feeding them is--well--the definition of crazy. They're NOT puppy dogs.
Moving them is NOT easy either, since they tend to bite HARD when trapped.
So I don't have an answer for the problem. All I can say is that it IS a
problem.
Anyone with workable ideas feel free to write us.
WARNING: They have very little power to open their jaws--but can break bones
when they close them. Also tails are deceptively strong and they are quite
fast. Catching one safely is NOT going to be easy. The smaller the animal the
better off you'll be.
