I have been here 35 years and first saw West Bay in 1969 It was pristine and very beautiful. It belonged to Paul Adams at that time and he was very careful with it. About 1975 or so, the first Cruise ship came in and anchored out side the reef in West Bay. People were excited and rushed to sell what they could. Then another came about a month later. We went snorkeling the next day and was distressed to find paper plates, plastic bags littering the reef. Young sea fans torn up and thrown on the beach and sprouting coconuts floating in the water where the tourists had pulled them out of the ground then decided not to take them aboard. A group of us cleaned up the beach and reef of all debris and brought the mess back in our boats. I protested to Dewey Merrian who was Aduana at that time and they stopped the cruise ships from coming. We monitored that beach for many years cleaning up the reef. It makes my heart ache to see what has happened to the last unspoiled island in the Caribbean. Like you I cannot understand What is going on as Jerry has always seem to have the Islands best interest at heart. Another two signers here........Don At this point there is no permit to do any type of dredging or construction to this area in West Bay but the dredging equipment still sits in West Bay as of yesterday.
