Good evening everyone...
I want to thank Daniel Ramus of Afriendlyhand in York
Harbor, Maine for organizing the Panel on the Honduran
Perspective at the Conference on Honduras 2007 (
http://www.projecthonduras.com/conference ). Dan came
up with the idea a few months ago of gathering
Hondurans from various sectors of Honduran society and
having them give their perspective on some of the
major problems that Honduras faces.
The overall theme of this panel will be, "Insights on
the kind of support programs that make an immediate
difference in the lives of Hondurans and those that
have relatively little impact."
This will be the opening panel for the conference. It
will commence at just after 8 o'clock on Thursday (Oct
11) morning. The speakers and topics will be as
follows:
8:20-8:35 am / Maria Elena Pleitéz de Paz (Trabajo
Social/Social Worker)
> Las necesides básicas de la niñez en el área
rural/The basic needs of children in rural areas.
8:40-8:55 am / Rosa Maria Hernández (Dasonoma
Forestral/Specialist in Forestry Law)
> La destrucción del media ambiente y el impacto en
la niñez/The destruction of the
environment and the impact on children.
9:00-9-15 am / Doris Lily Gutiérrez (Enfermera/Nurse)
> La problemática de la salud y falta de agua y su
impacto en las comunidades/The
relationship between poor health and lack of water,
and its impact on communities.
9:20-9:35 am / Merlín Omar Díaz Paz (Maestro de
Educación Primaria/Primary School Teacher)
> Problemas de la deserción escolar y necesidades
de las escuelas rurales/The problem of
school dropouts and the needs of rural schools.
9:40-9:55 am / Ramón Lelis Díaz Turcios (Inspector de
Zonas Cafetaleras/Inspector of Coffee
Farming Zones)
> La problemática por la falta de apoyo a los
pequeños cafetaleros y su impacto en la
niñez/The problems created due to a lack of support
for small coffee farmers, and the impact on
children.
This will be the first time we've tried something like
this at a Conference on Honduras. In hindsight, I wish
we would have done it sooner. Seems like a great idea
to first LISTEN to what Hondurans have to say. Even if
we just think of it in a symbolic way, it's incredibly
important, given that most of us our guests in
Honduras.
Thanks,
Marco
