Hi Melanie,
The Legal Seminar sounds like a terrific idea. The legal ins and outs of living in a third world country, plus the subtleties of such things as current politics would be a great help. What about those of us that can't make it in July (we're coming in October)? Any chance of another seminar then or maybe a workshop at one of the weekly "get togethers" someone mentioned maybe having?

Dear Dianne and everybody,
Thanks for bringing up the idea of a Legal Seminar. I have had this idea in the back of my head before, and Iīm glad youīre spurring me to pin it down.
I would love to do a Legal Seminar, if for no other reason than to not answer the same questions in fifteen different emails. Not that I mind emails, either, but sometimes face to face is better. Plus many people (who shall remain nameless) think I come across better in person than in email. People are always shocked by how harmless I am in real life.
For those of you who are interested in this type of event, I have a few questions -- picking the listīs brains:
Would you be willing to pay to attend? What seems like a fair price per person? Off the top of my head I would say about $25 for a two hour seminar and about an hour for Q and A would be a bargain, no? Especially for people who are getting ready to drop some money in property or business investments.
What kind of information would you like to hear? I would plan on the basics of property title documents, and residency. Maybe some basic survival (dealing with police, immigration and customs agents, and your rights in those situations). Should I include small business information too, like corporations and opening a business? Labor law (that is a huge subject and would probably need a separate seminar)?
Finally, I think that an event like this would need to be held in an environment conducive to . . .erm . . .paying attention and taking notes. So scratch Fosterīs off the list. Would it be good to have it somewhere along with a dinner? Or just refreshments? In my legal seminar fantasies (hey, everybody has their little fantasies), I was thinking of the dining room at Inn of the Last Resort, since it is large, yet not really open to the public. Iīm not sure if they could work us into their schedule without compromising their attention to their guests, but if they got the chance to serve some dinner they might be able to. I canīt really think of another venue for this type of get together, if anyone has a suggestion I would love to hear it.
July is good for me. Iīll be out there at least once in July. Maybe we could do a trial run, specially for Roatan listeros, for a reduced price and you wonīt laugh at me if I drop my visual aids (a giant blown up poster of an Escritura Publica), since it will be a first time thing.
I would love to hear any feedback, on or off-list. Thanks, Melanie ------ >
