    From the tropical doctors I've talked to, there are actually two main
    types.
    Roatan happens to be in the area where there is the less potent version,
    so
    you are able to treat (partially, I believe one additional drug is
    necessary) and prevent with chloroquine. The brand name on the island for
    chloroquine is often Aralen.

    If you are SE Asia or in Panama or further South, then you have to take
    Lariam (mefloquine) as a preventative, since that strain of malaria is
    resistant to chloroquine. Anecdotal reports of Lariam side effects are
    common, so I wouldn't take it, no matter where I went.
