Lived here 4 years--no Malaria. Some folks do get it--most often on mainland trips. Rainy season is worst--not now. There's a free clinic for this in Coxen Hole with medical care that IS OK and includes blood tests and meds if needed. Have had Malaria, but got it in Cozumel. Cost me thousands in the USA to get it diagnosed--a real hassle to find meds to treat it--only available on a military base. This is the one place I feel differently about medical care in Honduras. If I had malaria I'd come TO Honduras for treatment. Doctors here are more familiar with the disease--meds used are better here, diagnosis more easily gotten and more often correct and all treatment more available. If you do decide to take malaria meds be sure to ask about how it works with alcohol if you drink. Some meds react strongly to just a small amount of alcohol or it reduces the efficiency of the medicine bunches. A tetanus shot booster would do you more good. But check with your doctor about side effects on anything. Many people do NOT get this and need to anyway no matter where you live. You might get a cut more often than malaria and vaccines for this are not so easily available here. For longer term stays Hepatitis vaccines aren't a bad idea either--again just because you need them everywhere. More exotic stuff like cholera and such are not needed on Roatan. Just get your regular stuff up to date--which is never a bad idea anyway, eh?
