Roatan Information

 

Roatan is the largest of the Bay Islands and is located approx 35 miles of the North Coast of Honduras. Roatan is 32 miles long and varies in width from 1 to 3 miles across. The island is surrounded by nearly 70 miles of living reef making it a paradise for divers and snorkelers.

To enter Honduras you require a valid passport. On departure you are required to pay a US$27 departure tax which is payable in Lempiras or US dollars. They don't accept credit cards or traveler's checks.

The Lempira is the official currency of Honduras. Major credit cards are widely accepted and cash advances can be made with credit cards at most banks. Travelers Checks are also accepted.

Roatan is home to an International airport. American, Continental, Taca, Iberia and Sol Air all fly to Roatan in conjunction with local carriers. Sol Air, Taca and Continental also have direct flights once a week leaving from Miami and Houston.

The local residents of Roatan speak Caribbean English and Spanish.

Taxis are the prime mode of transport on Roatan all fees are negotiable and a price should be agreed on before entering the taxi to avoid problems. Local taxi rides should not cost more than $3 per person. Prices are more expensive at night. Mini buses are also available in the daytime and pass by approximately every 30 minutes and run between West End and Coxen Hole. The cost is around $1 per person.

The principal island road is paved. Rental cars can be rented in Roatan and US driver’s licenses are valid. We recommend that you make a reservation in advance to reserve a car.

Roatan offers a wide range of activities such as PADI diving courses, snorkeling, kayaking, sailing, fishing, hiking, horseback riding and of course relaxing.

Roatan is home to a wide range of restaurants, which offer local and international style cuisine. Fresh seafood is a specialty. Ricks American Café in Sandy Bay, Bite on the Beach in West Bay Beach and, Pinocchios, Argentina Grill, Lighthouse and Pura Vida are all recommended.

Coxen Hole is the main town on Roatan and is home to a few grocery stores where a wide range of food products can be purchased. Most banks are located in Coxen Hole. In West End Woodys and Coconut Tree both have a variety of groceries also a truck drives the streets of West End daily selling fresh vegetables and fruits also at times fresh seafood.

 

It is recommended you bring an insect repellant, like Off or Cutters, to Roatan and that you use it in the late afternoon.
